Janice Miller Reads from Her New Novel

Alive in Memory begins in France when Rachel,  a 7-year-old child witnesses the murder of her parents by an anti-Semitic mob in the late 1920s.  To survive, she must give up her name and her history at a time when Europe is steeped in economic distress.  After WWI, people were struggling to survive and looking to lay blame for their hardships.  Adolf Hitler seizes the moment, gaining power and acceptance by spewing hate and violence against anyone who is “different.”   Driven by hate and ignorance, and led by this deranged man, Nazis gain control of this broken society.

At eighteen, Rachel (now Lautrice) travels to Paris to study at university.  WWII has begun and France has been invaded and occupied by the Nazis.  While trying to stay under the radar, she is unwittingly brought into the French Resistance. This is Rachel’s story.
