Atlantic Highlands Historical Society presents: RECLAIMING OUR VOICE

Next in the series of Atlantic Highlands Historical Society talks celebrating America 250 is a presentation about the history of the women’s suffrage moment in New Jersey.

Carol Simon Levine will be portraying Lillian Feickert, president of the New Jersey Woman Suffrage Association from 1912 to 1920. Ms. Levine will tell the story of the role of New Jersey in the long struggle for women’s suffrage. 

Two hundred and twenty-five years ago, New Jersey was the only state that allowed women to vote. The right was lost in 1807.  It took five generations for women to regain that right.  Many of the women active in the women’s suffrage movement were from New Jersey, such as the Grimke sisters from Shrewsbury. Ms. Levine will showcase many of the women from this state who fought tirelessly until the 19th Amendment was finally passed.

About the speaker: Carol Simon Levin is a retired  librarian, author, storyteller and program presenter based in Bedminster, NJ. Among her written works is the book “Remembering the Ladies: From Patriots in Petticoats to Presidential Candidates”.
